COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
PHOROPTER, Additive Type
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description.
This commercial item description covers one type of phoropter (refractor) for determining the refractive error in the human eye. It shall be suitable for mounting on the commercial ophthalmic instrument arm such as made by Reichert or Reliance.
Salient characteristics.
Shall consist of a series of spherical lens power from at least +16.75 diopters through 0.00 to at least -19.00 diopters in successive steps of 0.25 diopters each and means of presentation to each eye individually or both eyes simultaneously.
Shall have cylindrical lens minus powers from 0.00 to not less than -7.50 diopters in successive steps of not more 0.25 diopters each. Below -2.50 diopters, 2 pairs of auxiliary plug-in or flip-up type cylinders may be furnished. As an alternate, cylinder power shall be from zero to -6.000, one pair of -2.000 plug-in lenses to provide extensions to -8.000 and one pair of plug-in lenses o provide 0.120 increment.
Shall have axis protractor, graduated in units of not more than 5 degrees.
Shall consist of paired loupes containing Risley rotary prisms, cross cylinders and Maddox rods. Maddox rods shall consist of one red and one white lens mounted in paired loupes, or in an auxiliary lens wheel. Risley prisms shall be graduated from zero to 20 prism diopters for each eye in steps of not more than 2 prism diopters each. A pair of ±0.25 diopter cross cylinders. Axis indicator for cross cylinders shall be graduated in units of not more than 5 degrees each.
Shall have integral retinoscopy lenses of +1.50 diopter power.
Shall have an integral corneal aligning device securely mounted.
Instrument shall be supplied with the following accessories:
a. One pair of red lenses either auxiliary or built in.
b. One pair of ±0.50 diopter cross cylinders, auxiliary or built in.
c. Three pairs of sterilizable white nylon face shields.
d. Near points test card holder and rod graduated in inches and centimeters. Card holder shall have integral card or as an alternate, no less than 4 plastic reading cards or a rotary test card shall be provided.
Workmanship. The instrument shall be free from defects which detract from its appearance or impair its serviceability.
