OPHTHALMOMETER
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description.
This commercial item description covers an ophthalmometer (keratomemter) to be used for measuring corneal curvature objectively. It shall be operated on 115 Volt, 60 Hz AC with a 3-prong plug.
Salient characteristics:
Shall consist essentially of an instrument base, instrument head with single tube telescope, illuminating system, adjustable patient’s forehead-rest and chin rest.
Shall have calibrated measurement drums for two principal meridians of the corneal curvature, without rotating the instrument head or mires. Scale divisions shall be graduated to at least 1/4 diopter steps, at either interior or exterior of the instrument. For the instrument with external calibrated markings, it shall be engraved and filled with paint for visibility and good contrast.
Cornea curvatures shall be obtained by superimpose the built-in mire images. Range of curvature shall be from 30.00 D to 60.00 D with or without added lens. Accuracy shall be within 1/8 diopter throughout the entire range.
Shall be able to rotate the instrument head on a horizontal axis through a range of at least 22 degrees.
Shall have means for determining the axis of astigmatism, either “with the rule” or “against the rule" and with scale graduation to at least 5 degrees over a range of at least 180 degrees.
Provide one occluder in front of patient’s right or left eye that can be swung away when it is not needed.
Eye piece shall be adjustable for the individual observer’s refractive condition with a built-in focusing target.
