INTERIM COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
POLARSICOPE, OPHTHALMIC LENS
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this Interim Commercial Item Description which was developed by the Defense Personnel Support Center, Directorate of Medical Material, DPSC-RST, 2800 South 20th Street, Philadelphia, PA 19101, based upon currently available technical information.
This interim commercial item description covers an instrument used for detecting strains introduced into ophthalmic lenses by the mounting process or by non-chemical heat treatment method.
Salient characteristic:
The unit shall be constructed of metal housing which houses a low wattage light bulb (rated for 115 volt, 60 Hz AC), with a pair of polarized lenses and an on-off switch. The base of the housing shall have rubber feet which prevents sliding from a table top.
Size of the polarized lenses shall have visual area large enough to view 52 mm glass lens when placed on the light path. The degree and type of strain being exerted on the lens shall be revealed by the light pattern.
The light shall be sufficiently illuminated for viewing either a dark sunglass lens or clear lens.
The electrical components of the instrument shall be in accordance with the applicable standards of the Underwriters Laboratories and the National Electrical Code. A six-foot electrical wire shall be attached, with a 3-prong plug.
Workmanship. The polariscope shall be free from defects which detract from its appearance or impair its serviceability.
Unit. Each (EA). One polariscope, constitutes one unit.
